Join us for the first of the Manchester South Physics Hub sessions, led by Graham Perrin, Physics Partners Coach. This in-person session is hosted by Reddish Vale High School, Stockport, SK5 7HD.
Teaching Energy
This session explores effective ways to teach the concept of energy using the stores and pathways model. We will examine how this model supports accurate energy calculations and connects to ideas of power and efficiency. Common misconceptions will be addressed, specially those surrounding heat and temperature, and clarifies when energy is and isn’t a useful explanatory concept.
Through demonstrations and discussion, we will:
Visualise energy changes by identifying starting and ending stores.
Learn approaches for teaching and calculating energy changes, including specific heat capacity.
Critically examine misleading or inaccurate energy descriptions found in teaching materials.
Reinforce key teaching principles: energy is quantifiable, conserved, and best understood through comparisons of initial and final conditions.
Distinguish between describing energy transfers and explaining physical processes.
By the end of the session, you will have practical strategies for teaching energy as a calculable, predictive tool, grounded in physical reasoning and free from misleading metaphors.
This session is fully-funded and delivered by Physics Partners. This session is part of the Manchester South Physics Hub series of twilight sessions for physics teachers, particularly non-specialists and early career teachers. Technicians are also welcome to attend.
