Half-termly Subject Knowledge CPD for non-specialist teachers of physics and ECTs
Session topic: Electromagnetism - the more challenging aspects at GCSE
This workshop led by Neal Gupta at Fairfax Academy, is designed as a follow-up to the introductory session on electromagnetism, providing GCSE Physics teachers with a deeper understanding of the more challenging aspects of the topic. The session will focus on the principles and applications of the DC motor, exploring how forces arise on current-carrying conductors in magnetic fields and the role of the motor effect in practical devices. Additionally, the workshop will cover electromagnetic induction. Practical approaches for teaching these concepts, common student misconceptions, and effective strategies for addressing them will be discussed.
Physics Partners is a charity that provides free support to physics teachers in state secondary schools in the UK. Their mission is to improve physics teaching and inspire students to consider studying physics at A-level.
This workshop is part of a half-termly programme of subject knowledge CPD for non-specialist teachers of physics and early career teachers in the East Midlands area.
Workshop lead: Neal Gupta, Physics Partners Coach. Neal has been teaching since 1993 and has experience in four different schools. At his last school, he was Head of Physics, STEM Coordinator and Head of Upper School, an SLT role. Since 2008, Neal has also worked as a consultant for the Institute of Physics supporting the teaching of physics primarily across the East Midlands.
